Happy birthday, J.K. Rowling! Which of her seven Harry Potter novels do you think is the most satisfying read?

Ah, my oldest fandom. I'm not ashamed to admit that I actually woke up this morning saying "Happy birthday, Harry Potter!" Okay, maybe slightly ashamed. Anyway, he's 29 today. Or he would be, if he was a real person.

I would have to say of all the HP books, Goblet of Fire is my favorite. I'd gotten into the series just a few months before this book came out, having received the first book for my 11th birthday in lieu of a Hogwarts letter. I still adore this book nearly ten years after I first read it, because... I don't know. This is the first time I can remember feeling that craving for more of something, that sort of anticipation that you're going to read or watch something awesome soon, and maybe that's why GoF has stuck out so clearly to me of all the books in the series. At the time, it was probably the longest book I'd ever read. Got through it in four hours, what up.

But in the book itself, I also like the Yule Ball and the Goblet of Fire mystery (which isn't quite as sneaky as the culprits in the first three books, but still pretty awesome), and seeing the Ron/Hermione dynamic take its first baby steps to something more than friendship. I even like the house elf storyline because it gave Hermione more of a driving force behind her character, that she'd found something outside of school and her friends that she was passionate about. I also liked these glimpses of the international Wizarding world, rather than just the Brits. The Quidditch World Cup is one of my favorite sequences in the book, and I kind of wished we could have seen more of the students from the other schools too, but whatever. And I also love the cover and totally did not used to make out with it when I was eleven.

And the movie version of this book SUCKS ASS. So disappointing. I nearly cried when I was done watching it the first time, and not in a good way.

...I still owe you all a post about what the books I've been reading lately (because squeeee, I'm reading again, and I have recs!), and on what few RL updates there are to give. I'm sure there's something. But... I'm too lazy to do it now. Also, I should be working.

((BTW, random, but since when have they had the "Detect" button next to your location? Is LJ stalking us now? Creeeeeepy!!))

Don't worry, any film spoilers will be put under a cut. =)

So last night, I drove allllll the way out to Annapolis to see Harry Potter 6 at midnight with my friend Kelly! I'd never done a midnight screening before, but this one was definitely a blast. There were tons of people there, and the theater had free face painting and Borders had a table set up where you could buy HP merchandise. But the thing is, they never told us when we could actually go into the theater and take our seats, so by the time we finally walked in at quarter to 11 most of the theaters were completely full. Luckily we managed to find two decent seats in the very last theater we tried, but I was still disappointed. They were NOT organized enough. Communication FAIL. =P

Oh, and quick storytime:

So me and Kelly were dressed up, kind of, in Harry Potter shirts, and she had a cloak and I had a witch's hat. And we were sitting kind of off to the side behind all these cordons (because we thought that's where the line was going to be), and this guy (who looked like he was about 13) walks up to the rope and is all "You guys seeing Harry Potter?" I said yeah, we were, because DUH, while Kelly was sarcastic and said we weren't. So the guy (who I will refer to as Jackass) walks away, then comes back five minutes later, asking "You guys sure you aren't seeing Harry Potter?" then leaving, giggling like the Jackass he is. So me and Kelly are sitting there like "WTF?" because it's not like we were the only people who had dressed up, or even the people with the most elaborate costumes or anything. Anyway, then Jackass comes back AGAIN with this Jackassy grin on his face, asking, "Okay. Are you guys SURE you're not seeing Harry Po--" So I whip the hat off my head (revealing my dreadful hat hair, no doubt) and calmly (okay, not that calmly), from my spot on the ground, tell Jackass to go fuck himself. Jackass sprints away and we don't see him for the rest of the night. =D Plus, there was mall security around where we were sitting a little while later! Might have been a crazy happenstance, but I prefer to think it wasn't. I've heard I'm scarier than I give myself credit for. ^_^

So after that thrilling adventure, then we saw the movie...

Half Blood Prince movie spoilers under the cut! )

After like, six months of trying to restrain myself, I now have a paid LJ account, guys!!!!!!!! Finally, I no longer have to limit myself to 15 paltry icons. Finally, I can edit my comments. Finally, I can bid adieu to all those amusing/obnoxious University of Phoenix ads!

But really, I'm just over the moon about my icon limit. I'm an icon whore, what can I say?

So that's one thing that's already making today awesome. ^_^

Guess what the other thing is?

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, YO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Driving up to MD to see it with my friend Kelly... we would have seen it back in November at school, but some greedy bitches pushed the date back to July. But I'm so excited to see her! And to see the movie! THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!

(random: I need more Harry Potter icons.)

I'm so excited/apprehensive/fangirly today. Hopefully I can get through the work day without (further) losing my focus. *puts on Sensory Deprivator 5000*

ETA: I've also changed my layout. Yay! We'll see how long this lasts.

VMars movie?!?!? Sounds pretty awesome to me! Though I'll still have to see season 3 at some point...

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/08/exclusive-veron.html

So like I said, I haven't seen season 3, so I have no idea what I would want out of this movie, if it ever gets made.  don't have that same craving for closure that most other fans probably have. However, I would LOVE to see more of my two favorite characters: Wallace and Weevil! I don't even know what these two actors have been up to since the show ended, though I'm pretty sure I've seen Wallace in an Orbit commercial. That made my soul die a little bit. I could care less how much of Logan and Veronica they show in the possible movie. Ugh. Logan.

Anyway, I just moved in to Elon to get ready for my awesome SOPHOMORE YEAR!!!!!!!! It's so weird to be here when no one else is though. Very lonely. I can't wait to meet all my residents so this school year can officially get started!

And yes, I'm a nerd.

STILL NO DR. HORRIBLE SOUNDTRACK. This makes me miserable. As does the ghetto fabulous light in my bathroom.

And I think a rant about the HBP release date might be a little belated by now and thus unnecessary, don't you? You don't? Me neither! Here goes!

So. What the HELL does WB think it's doing?! It's so ridiculous that they're making fans wait almost a full year for this movie when we've all been dying for it for... ever? Especially after how horrible the last one was. And... like, all of them. What can I say? I just like Harry Potter, and I NEED MY FIX. (Though I have to say that the teaser trailer for HBP looks really promising.) Plus I was all excited to go to a midnight release with the Quidditch Under the Oaks gang, but now since it's coming out in SUMMER we can't do that. Pout.

Oh, and then what was up with them moving up the Twilight movie to what was supposed to be Harry Potter weekend? (Not WB, but whoever's putting out the Twilight movie.) Now, I'm no fan of Twilight. At all. And I hate the way everyone's trying to make it into the new Harry Potter. Well, they kind of do that with all YA fiction nowadays, but still. You can't compare the two, and having Twilight come out on the day Half-Blood Prince was supposed to just... gragh. I'll tell you this much: going to a Twilight midnight release party would be nowhere near HALF as fun as a Harry Potter midnight release party. I think it'd just depress me.

Anyway, I'm sad. I've been going through a huge HP dry spell for a while now. I can't remember the last time I even read one of the books!!!!! Which is unacceptable. And I was really looking forward to this new movie, and now I'll have to wait EVEN LONGER for it to come out!!

I think what kills me the most is that there isn't even a legitimate excuse for the delay. Warner Bros. was basically like, "Well, The Dark Knight's made enough money for us this year... let's push Harry Potter back to the next fiscal year!" I mean, I wouldn't be that mad if they needed more time for postproduction stuff, or if it was because of the writer's strike, or whatever, but THIS? That's not even a good reason! That's just greedy. And leaves the winter box office wide open for vampire crapfest.

Phew! Glad that's off my chest.
